  1. Such a great project! I love all your examples and I like that you highlighed big themes, especially those that portray women as more sexually tempting and in need of purity. I also liked that you showed how art has changed over time and that religion has had a sustained influence on art.

  2. This project is so powerful and is a great outlet for analyzing the meaning behind certain works of art. Christian art especially tends to depict women in a very sultry, but tempting manner which ties into the idea of expected purity. Your breakdown of the art really interested me!

  3. This project is so well-researched, well-articulated, and beautiful. I loved that you included pictures almost everywhere as it helped me situate myself within the ever-changing context of nudity. I wonder if nudity– especially the one that aims to portray non-males in a negative light– can be reclaimed? I think it can, and I look forward to that day when its less about shock-value and more about collective healing from a patriarchal world. –ars

  4. I don’t know much about the art world, but I found this to be really interesting because, in my mind, art and religion have close connections so I assumed that Christianity would be more okay with nudity. I also think you bring up an important point which is that the religious perspective on nudity in art is not set in stone and that we have the power to change the narrative. Great job!

  5. I absolutely loved this. Art has such an amazing history, especially in the context of Christianity. Christianity, especially the Catholic Church, has had such a hold on art, and it was really nice to see the history of that laid out like this. Additionally, nudity I feel has always been such a taboo, so learning just how religious the history of nudity is was so enriching.

  6. Great project! This totally reminded me of an art history class I took when we talked about perspective and the ways that primarily male artists created confident, powerful male nudes and shy, private female nudes. Adding Christianity onto that artistic norm only throws that gendered superiority/inferiority complex into the stratosphere and I really appreciate your discussion of that and your graphics. Amazing job!

  7. Wow, this topic is such a gold mine. These paintings speak volumes about how nudity can be used to portray men as powerful Gods and women as demure figures of temptation. The male gaze is so evident in how differently men and women are painted. The nude women almost look like they know you are viewing them naked, if that makes sense. It makes me feel kind of gross looking at them. The men on the other hand are shown in action, showing of their muscles and strength. Super interesting project!

  8. This was a super cool project and I really enjoyed hearing about the context of how nudity could represent different things. I was super surprised to hear that the church didn’t mind nude depictions of goddesses since they represented ideals rather than people, but strongly condemned depictions of normal women. I had never really thought about it, but there is constant nude depictions of Venus in popular culture, and you’re right those do tend to be viewed differently culturally, even in modern day!

  9. It’s a very thought provoking and beautiful project with so much info compacted concisely into this stunning PowerPoint. The art included was stunning and I appreciated the inclusion of nudity that deviated from what is the norm of what is considered conventionally attractive such as the art that depicted body hair.

  10. This was so informative! It was interesting to learn how nudity in art had at some point been used as a way of rebellion against religious ideologies and how that stands in contrast with the negative connotations drawn from nudity in Christian art itself. The project overall is very well researched and I love how you organized it so that it walks us through the timeline of varying perspectives on nude art.

  11. I have always loved learning about art and Art History, and I have always wondered why Christian art had nude tendencies. I love your analyses and the care and thought that went into every painting and scripture choice. I also just loved the overall design of the presentation, I loved the color scheme!

  12. I loved this project so, so much. First of all, your powerpoint is aesthetically very beautiful. I would also like to say that I appreciated the originality of this project. I love learning about art history so this was exciting for me to see in our classroom!

  13. The historical context you gave this project was so informative. It was interesting to see the eras of approval and rejection of the human body. It is so interesting to think about the concept of rejecting the human form especially from the teachings of the Adam and Eve story. Great job!

  14. This is an amazing topic for a project. I’ve honestly always wondered about the amount of nudity in Christian art when purity culture and modesty is so heavily emphasized nowadays. You definitely did help clarify that for me. It was very engaging and I really appreciated the level of detail you provided.
