Liliya, this was an amazing presentation! I feel like I learned so much about a topic I was already interested in. It was cool to see you tie a culture that people wouldn’t necessarily associate with religion together. I think the liberation movements of women, queer people, sex, etc were so impactful and powerful and in my opinion, you beautifully shed light on the complexities and beauties of all these individual movements, and how they interacted as one. One of my favorite parts of the presentation is when you explain the similarities and differences between hippie and hookup culture. I had never thought about these two things together before. Overall I feel like I learned so much and your presentation made me want to investigate further into the intersection of these cultural and religious ones.
This is such an engaging and informative presentation. I especially really like how you consider if and how hippie culture has impacted modern hookup culture. I appreciate how you acknowledge the harm that sexual liberation movements have had on women and how men took them to mean free sex and sort of turned liberation movements against women. That also ties into how hookup culture can be seen as both sexually liberating and damaging. I also like the pictures you used. I thought they broke up the text nicely and helped paint a complete picture of the hippie lifestyle.
Liliya, your project was aesthetically beautiful and super informative! I learned a lot that I didn’t know about the hippies and their history. I thought it was great that you acknowledged at the beginning that behind the hippies and the Beat movement, there were Black radicals who refused to follow social norms at the time. I bet these Black radicals had a huge influence on the culture that is often not talked about. Connecting the hippies to religion made this a very cool and I thought it was really interesting that the hippie focus on “immediate experience” came from Zen Buddhism. Great job!
First of all, I love the aesthetic of your project as it really set the tone and mood to learn about hippie culture. Secondly, I also really enjoyed the photos that you chose to use within your presentation – I found them very visually impactful and informative. In terms of content, I learned so much from your presentation! It was fascinating to learn about hippie culture’s impact on things such as the gay liberation and open relationships. The quotes that you embedded within your project in order to introduce new topics were also very interesting and effectively demonstrated the hippie mentality. I particularly love the one “Everything was beautiful.”
I absolutely love the quotes you used throughout your project! While I know they aren’t the main points of your project I actually do think they provide a good hint at the overall vibe of hippie’s and their attitudes towards sexuality. I also really like the mindset you mentioned of if it feels good then do it so long as it doesn’t hurt anyone else, I don’t know why that isn’t a more common mindset today honestly. Your whole presentation taught me so much I probably would have never learned elsewhere and it was extremely interesting, thank you!
I really enjoyed your project! It was really interesting to see you explore how hippie culture affected modern sexual ethics as I found that had an effect on what I was talking about in my culture. I think sexual liberation was a good thing for a lot of people, but it has influenced modern hook-up culture which is not a good thing. It is interesting how it almost seems that sexual liberation was corrupted by the patriarchy and made into something that benefits a small group of people. Overall great project!
Your project is quite lovely. The setup of your slides, as well as the pictures you included and the template you selected fit the theme very well and made the project eye catching. You also connected two lifestyles that I never would have thought to compare to one another. I appreciate how you included both positives and negatives about sexual liberation and how hookup culture is close to repeating some of the mistakes made in hippie culture and other sexual liberation movements.
This presentation layout was so cute! I loved the aesthetic of it and your topic was super interesting, I never would’ve connected hippie culture to modern hookup culture, so this really broadened my view! I really liked how you talked about their mindset and how their movement ultimately failed. It was interesting to think about how this movement sort of parallels modern day hookup culture in a way and how the mindsets are a bit different. I also liked that you included the pros and cons of both. Great job!
I love that you chose to make a pamphlet instead of a typical blog or another project method. I think that that was a really unique choice. It was also evident that you did a lot of great research for your topic because your presentation was very thorough. I found it interesting that you brought up the fact that even within this really progressive social movement, there was still a power divided between men and women that bled into the sexual liberation movement.
I also did not know that the ‘free thinking’ aspect of the hippie movement was originally derived from Eastern traditions like Buddhism, but now knowing that it makes sense.
Great work!!!
I loved your presentation! Over the years I have learned a few things about hippie culture and “free love”, but found this topic in conversation with hook up culture to be fascinating. I guess I always regarded sexual liberation to only have positive influences, but never took the time to consider how the practices may have opened the door to hook-up culture and its negative consequences. I also found your presentation be so pretty and really fitting for your theme.
Liliya, first of all, I loved the design of your pamphlet – it was super cute and appropriate to the topic! With regards to the content, it was clear that you did extensive research. You raised some important points on the relationship between sex and drugs, and how hippies’ use of dope complemented their form of engagement in sex. I found it interesting that although both hookup and hippie culture emphasize uncommitted sex, hippie culture seemed to have a stronger sense of sexual ethics and value. I wonder how we apply the more positive aspects of hippie culture to modern sex and hookup culture.
I absolutely loved this project and how much information you were able to find on the movement and its current implications. I specifically loved how you were able to connect hippie culture to modern day hookup culture, I think there is a fascinating overlap there. The hippie movement of the 60s and 70s is such an interesting concept to me because a lot of the movement is influenced by Eastern religions, specifically the spirituality aspect of it. With the spirituality, came a wave of sexual freedom. I appreciated how you explained how those new attitudes led to support for the feminist movement and gay liberation.
