REL 189 Project on being Catholic and Lesbian, and the differences/similarities between Irish Catholics and Mexican Catholics
Karla, I love the format you did your project in! Podcasts are such a fun way to communicate your own experiences and the research you did for this project. I especially love that you were able to speak from personal experience but your girlfriend was willing to share some of her experiences too. It’s so interesting to see the vast similarities and also differences between growing up Irish Catholic and Mexican Catholic. It’s really interesting to me that culture can deeply influence religion. It’s interesting that you both operate from the same faith but also have some very different experiences with it. I appreciate how open and honest both of you are and I feel like I learned a lot and also related to some of the experiences as I grew up with many Irish Catholic family members myself!
I really enjoyed your project and in class presentation!! It was interested to hear you and your girlfriend compare and contrast your respective experiences about growing up in the Mexican and Irish Catholic tradition. It’s amazing how many similarities you both share and even more amazing how you guys were able to bond over them. Having your project in podcast form was also so cool – I always enjoy listening to podcasts while I walk and do chores!
I love that you did your project as a podcast! I think this helped so much with making it more of a conversation about sexuality in Catholicism and a more casual way to share you and your girlfriends personal experiences with it. I thought it was really fascinating to see how much Catholicism differs for you guys because of the cultural differences as I never thought about how much culture can impact even the same religion. I really liked how honest you were about your personal experiences growing up in the tradition because I feel like just sharing research doesn’t have the same impact that personal experiences do and I appreciate you both being willing to share that with us, thank you!
I absolutely love that your project is in a podcast format. I love listening to podcasts while I’m cleaning. I found it really interesting how different some of your experiences were from your girlfriend. It’s amazing how much a culture can influence how a religion is taught and carried out. The inclusion of personal experiences, both by you and your girlfriend made this project feel much more intimate. When research and projects are simply research, they sometimes feel disconnected and not always applicable, but your use of personal experiences made this project much more real and connected to day-to-day life which really keeps the attention of an audience and helps to really get your message across.
I found this podcast to be really impactful. I admire the vulnerability it takes to compare experiences with religion and culture, and I think that you did such a good job. It was really interesting to hear about how your and your girlfriend’s experiences with Catholicism differed so much because of the cultures you grew up with while also being very similar in some ways. The way that culture can sometimes permeate every aspect of life is fascinating, and I loved hearing you discuss that. I listen to podcasts all the time, and I really really enjoyed this one.
Thank you for this project. I found it very intimate and impactful. I really appreciate that you did not aim to show all the ways in which you differ, but rather emphasised on the way the two communities are similar. This conversation, I think is necessary for the Catholic community to grow closer and “bridge the gap”. I found it very interesting how similar religious traditions adapt to the cultural setting, or vice versa. Very thoughtful project<3
Karla – I really liked the format of your project! It felt like a very relaxed and honest/open conversation. Podcasts are so cool and I love that you added a little intro and outro. I wasn’t raised Catholic, so I hadn’t previously really thought about the differences in Catholicism across different countries. It’s really interesting to see how much culture can impact religion and vice versa. It’s also interesting how vast people’s experiences with religion can be even within the same religion. Thank you for your vulnerability in this project!
I absolutely loved this project! I love that it was in a podcast format because it gave me an even better understanding of your views and experiences with catholicism. I really resonated with this as I grew up Irish Catholic, where mass was incredibly dry. I thought it was really interesting when you mentioned the differences in how children were treated in the church. At least in my church, there was this back room with a speaker and a glass window so the parents could hear and see the mass, but others could not hear the little kids. Overall I really enjoyed your project!
Karla, I loved your project! The format of the podcast was such a unique and fun way to invite the audience into your conversation. I’ve also been a fan of podcasts and how they can express ideas that other forms cannot. I thought it was the perfect format to have this discussion, bringing the personal experiences of you and your girlfriend into life. It was so interesting to hear about how cultural differences shape personal experiences in Catholicism.
Karla, your podcast with your girlfriend was so fun and interesting to listen to! It’s super interesting how even though you both grew up Catholic, the Irish and Mexican Catholic communities differ greatly in their teachings and traditions. It was super interesting when you discussed how the church’s condemnation of birth control and sex has resulted in large families and teen pregnancies, which shows the consequences of sex negativity. It was super fun to listen to your podcast, as I felt like I was listening in on an insightful conversation!
First of all, LOVED the intro music! I really appreciated the personal journey you and your girlfriend took us on in this podcast. It was a beautiful touch to this religious analysis of similarities between the Mexican and Irish Catholic communities. The podcast was such a great idea because it allows for more free-flowing thoughts to be articulated. I have seen a rise in podcasts about sexuality within religion in the past few years. I recommend looking into this podcast called “The Modesty Files” if anyone is interested. I interned as their sound mixing engineer last semester and I found the topics they covered very interesting. The hosts come from a fundamentalist background and they bring guests on to discuss their own stories about struggling with their identity and sexuality within their religion. I am excited to see if you do more episodes like this, because I am positive these are the types of podcasts many people are looking for theses days.
