First of all, your blog post was phenomenal! I thought it was very eloquently said and very true: people who are force-fed the idea of sexual purity will likely end up in horrible sexual interactions. Additionally, I love the survey that you conveyed. The results you presented were so impressive to me: I did not think that people felt like there was a very prevalent hookup culture on this campus, but they did. Additionally, I was pretty sure that religious reasons did hinder people’s choices to participate, or not, in hookup culture, surprisingly, people did not think so. I think your survey was very successful and informative! Great project!
Your project was really well presented–the blog/survey combo was perfect and effective. As someone who also did not grow up super Christian, hookup culture on Christian campuses (and the general culture of this type of school) is fascinating and kind of scary to me. I also liked that your survey was specific to U of R because it was really interesting to see how hookup culture plays out and what people think about it in an environment I’m familiar with: it’s not just a thing of big party and state schools, but of campuses of all types. This was super cool to listen to and talk about after–thanks!
As someone who is neither religious nor grew up with purity culture, I found your project to be really informative and well researched. I was specifically intrigued by your section on sexual assault in relation to Christian campuses. It’s heartbreaking to see how engaging in sexual activity can be more rapidly punished than the act of taking advantage of someone. I also thought your study focusing on students at U of R was a cool aspect to include. I didn’t think hookup culture was very prevalent but it was interesting to see how others experience it here, really informative!
This is such an interesting way to look at how hookup culture manifests on Christian and Secular campuses. I feel like it’s really important for people to have models of healthy sexual interaction to recreate. On Christian campuses those don’t exist because of purity culture, while at U of R they may not be prevalent enough because of hook-up and situationship culture. Overall, really cool work and an interesting read!
Your project was really interesting. Coming to this school I never thought hookup culture would be a thing just because of how this school is viewed. However, attending this school for four years has changed my views on the hookup culture. It is upsetting to think about how sexual assault is not even acknowledged at some schools. It makes me wonder if people decide to not go out and party because of it.
I think the presentation is really meaningful. The survey questions as well as the number of respondents makes it really convincing, and it is interesting to see what college student think about hook up culture in here. I find the result that around 61% people agree that there are some form of consent during hook up, and it would be more interesting if you add a follow up question like: What made you think there’s consent? Actions? Hugging/Kissing? etc. I also like the way you analyze the result and explored the relationship between religion and people’s thought in hook up culture. Thank you for sharing!
The connection between purity culture/repressed sexuality and sexual assault is one I feel is never talked about enough. I appreciate your project bringing this to light and using our campus as the focal point in your research. This is something we had discussed with the class but I would also be interested in seeing a sort of followup survey to see what students define consent as/put into practice in their daily lives and if there is a disconnect between what they understand to be consent/what consent is to them in the moment
Your project had such interesting results in the survey, seeing how students respond to hookup culture in our campus was very impressive. Hookup culture is prevalent in Puerto Rican high schools, especially when going out to parties. However, it was usual that these hook-ups would transform into a relationship between the persons involved. Seeing how hook-up culture has developed into college feels completely disturbing knowing some universities force their students to sign a contract promising to abstain from sex during their four years in college. Not to mention, that poor student who was expelled for coming forward about their sexual assault. This blame put on those for having sex outside of marriage is oppressive and wrong.
Your project was very insightful, I did not know there were certain colleges where they made their students sign contracts where they can’t have any sexual activity on campus, nor that hookup culture was very relevant in our own campus. It is crazy to think that many students even as they are adults in an educational facility they are often prohibited (even if it is unintended) to learn about healthy sexual habits or about sexuality in general. Excellent job!
I think this project does a really good job of explaining multiple aspects of hook up culture. As someone in greek life, hookup culture is very prominent and seen some of these things in action. I was unaware how religious institutions created contracts to prevent sexual contact and how that then has a negative affect on women when reporting sexual assault. Im very glad I was educated on this topic
I thought that this project was very well done! I honestly didn’t know much about all of the restrictions and issues in Christian colleges in terms of sexual assault so I appreciate you shedding a light on this very serious topic. I also liked how you surveyed students from the University of Rochester, while our administration is not nearly as restrictive as Christian campuses, it shed light on how consent might become blurred when drugs and alcohol are in the picture.
I enjoyed the combination of the blog post and survey for your project! The blog provides an information aspect and the survey provides real student insight into hookup culture. I agree with a majority of the survey results about how the expectation and reality of hookup culture is SO DIFFERENT and is very intimidating.
Including a survey of UR students was really interesting as it helped contextualize this discussion in a university environment we are all knowledgeable of. Adding some open-ended not required questions where people could share more about their thoughts could’ve been interesting to include as well. 90 responses is pretty great especially for only promoting it on Snapchat! There was a lot of variety in the answers too which was interesting to see.
This was a really relevant topic to research and present! I was interested to learn that hookup culture isn’t as popular as I had assumed, though it could also vary by the various communities we are part of. Really cool project!
I thoroughly enjoyed the first part of your project. Majority of the time when people talk about hookup culture, it’s within a more liberal setting. I hadn’t really given it much thought to those who go to Christian University because I had assumed that they didn’t take in partake in hookup culture, but that’s me for assuming so and it’s unfortunate that the students in these universities don’t have a person they can turn to when they need to talk about these serious issues. I also really enjoyed talking about the hookup culture at the U of R. This is a relatively smaller campus compared to other universities and I thought people would be a little more vigilant about it but that’s not the case all the time. The survey done on snapchat was such a smart move and it’s nice to see that people did respond to the survey. I would have really liked to see the separation in class because I feel like that experience changes once you’re in your last year at the U of R compared to when you’re a freshman. Overall, your project was interesting and I thoroughly enjoyed reading and learning more about hookup culture.
